Basketball Slogans and Their Purpose
As the NBA playoffs are now in full swing, one can’t help to notice all the basketball slogans on both television and in the various arenas. These types of slogans, used by the league itself and its individual teams around the country, serve a number of important functions, not the least of which is to boost team morale and create a wave of fan support. In this article we will take a closer look at basketball slogans, and their purpose, and introduce you to some of the more popular slogans in use today.
Basketball Slogans and their Purpose
As late fall and early winter rolls around each year, basketball teams of all levels and abilities begin practicing and competing around the country. Teams consist of men and women, boys and girls at the professional level, collegiate and amateur squads, high school teams and even the “little league” version of basketball which is popular among kids of all ages. With dreams of victory and a championship running through their heads, millions of basketball players around the world take to the hard court vying for their one big chance at glory. Yes, basketball is a sport loved by all—a sport which from its humble beginnings in a small Illinois town has now exploded exponentially throughout the world and continues to attract new players and fans each year.
Among the many mainstays of basketball are the slogans created each year by teams and leagues. And depending on the language and nature of these slogans, they can serve a number of different purposes. To illustrate this, below we will list a few of the more important functions of basketball slogans, with one or two examples each:
• Marketing. Many slogans are created for marketing and advertising purposes, and this is perhaps best illustrated by the slogan for the National Basketball Association. Their 2011 slogan reads “The NBA: Where Amazing Happens.” This slogan was created by the NBA, the largest and most popular professional basketball league in the world, and when used in commercial advertising, it often accompanies scenes such as Kobe Bryant and King James dominating their opponents or Dwayne Wade and Shaquille O’Neal wowing their respective fans with high flying acrobatics and amazing slam dunks. This slogan not only helps draw more people to the arenas to see their team, but encourages fans to watch the games on television and buy NBA-related merchandise.
• School Pride. Some slogans are merely created to boost school spirit and pride in their team. These types of slogans, which include familiar sayings such as “One Spirit, One Team, One Win” are popular among high school and college-based basketball programs, and you will often see them plastered on shirts, hats, mugs and other merchandise.
• Encourage Teamwork. Teamwork is an essential component of basketball, which is the reason there are literally hundreds of slogans created each year to emphasize it. Some of these include, “Hustle and Heart Set Us Apart,” and “There’s No I in Team.”
• Intimidate Opponents. Basketball slogans can also be created as a way to psychologically intimidate the opponent. Some examples that demonstrate this are the slogans, “Respect all, fear none,” and “Forget it princess, not even Cinderella is getting this ball.”
To summarize, basketball slogans have several important functions, including marketing, instilling pride and teamwork and even intimidation. But whatever their specific function, these slogans, which usually consist of just a few choice words, are created as a way to catch people’s attention and to create a memorable association between the slogan and the team.
